289 is a Canadian area code in service since 2001. It covers the Greater Toronto Area and runs on Eastern Time (UTC-5, UTC-4 in summer).
A call from a 289 number you do not know usually comes from Mississauga or nearby: a shop, a clinic, a courier, a customer. The area code says nothing about the caller's intent. If a call looks suspicious, let it go to voicemail and check the number before calling back. Businesses that show their name on the call (caller ID) get called back more often.
To reach a 289 number from Canada or the United States, dial all ten digits: 289 then the seven digits of the number. From abroad, add the country code: +1 289.
Area code 289 covers the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Burlington. It overlays 905 and 365: the same area can have any of them, and ten-digit dialling is required. Same belt as 905, same calls on the move.
A 289 number tells your customer you are local. That is what gets you answered: a call from an unfamiliar area code often goes to voicemail unheard.
Frequently asked questions
Where is area code 289?
289 serves the Greater Toronto Area, mainly Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Burlington.
Can I get a 289 number without living there?
Yes. A 289 number can be set up from anywhere in Canada and works on your current phone, with no new device or SIM.
How long before it works?
The number is live as soon as the account is created. Your first call can come in within the minute.
Can I move my existing 289 number?
Yes, porting is included in all plans. It takes 5 to 10 business days, and a temporary number is assigned during the transition.
Can I text from this number?
Yes. The same 289 number sends and receives texts, and an AI agent can answer them.
How is this different from a toll-free number?
A 289 number roots you in a region and reassures a local customer. A toll-free number speaks to the whole country without saying where you are. Many businesses take both.
What time is it in the 289 area code?
Area code 289 runs on Eastern Time (UTC-5, UTC-4 in summer). Mississauga keeps the same time as the rest of the region.
A 289 number called me, who is it?
A 289 number comes from the Greater Toronto Area. It may be a shop, a clinic or a person in Mississauga. The area code alone does not tell you who is calling or whether the call is genuine: when in doubt, let it ring and check the number before calling back.
What is the difference between 289 and 905?
None on the map: 289 and 905 cover the same territory. 289 was added when the other ran out of numbers. Both are dialled with ten digits and cost the same.
